Vijayadasami is celebrated on the tenth day of Devi Navarathri. It symbolizes victory of good over evil. In southern (Tamilnadu, Karnataka) and eastern (West Bengal) part of India, it is celebrated to signify the victory of Goddess Durga over Mahishasura. In northern part of India it is celebrated to signify the victory of Rama over Ravana.
For students of fine arts – music and dance Vijayadasami is the most auspicious day of the year, a day of new beginnings. Students commence their music training on this day with a prayer to Goddess Saraswathi, to grant them the knowledge of arts, as Goddess Saraswathi is the presiding deity for music and fine arts.
Students learning music, pray to Goddess Saraswathi to bless them with continued success in their music training and pay their respects to their music teachers/gurus with offerings of fruits, flowers and sometimes dhotis or saris, or some gifts, referred as Guru Dakshina, to show their gratitude and love for their gurus.
Music teachers teach their students, a new song on Vijayadasami, with prayers to Goddess Saraswathi to shower her blessings on them.
On this auspicious day of Vijayadasami, RagaChitra welcomes new students for Carnatic vocal and Carnatic Veena, for all levels (basics, intermediate and advanced) and all ages.
